Abdominal Liposuction

Abdominal liposuction is the answer to getting rid of those stubborn belly fat deposits. Everyone dreams of a lean, tight stomach like those we see on the swimsuit models. But the truth is that it's almost impossible to achieve that look naturally. Abdomens automatically pad themselves with flab accumulations of fat that no amount of sit-ups, crunches or weight resistance can eliminate. If you've recently lost a lot of weight or had a baby, there is likely to be not only fat but loose skin adding to the flab on your stomach. And don't let the term "love handles" deceive you no one loves these extra rolls of fat around their body, or that stomach "pooch" that keeps clothes from hanging perfectly or swimsuits from looking great.

You've probably noticed that even people who take great care of their bodies, eating carefully and exercising constantly, have some stomach flab. That should be enough to convince you that sometimes it takes more than good physical habits to take away the extra inches from your tummy. Today, there are a variety of forms of abdominal liposuction that can help you.

What is the abdominal lipo procedure like?

Years ago, women who opted for a "tummy tuck" or any kind of stomach liposuction submitted themselves to months of recovery. Today, men and women alike are getting targeted stomach liposuction procedures with much better results. Depending on the volume of fat being removed from your abdomen and the amount of loose skin, your surgeon may opt to treat the tummy area with abdominal liposuction alone, and/or with a tummy tuck. Newer versions of liposuction, like laser liposuction, allow targeting of smaller areas of fat deposits and simultaneously tighten overlying skin. Smaller cannulas are used to dissolve and remove the fat via suction, with less trauma and bruising than traditional stomach liposuction. The whole stomach liposuction procedure takes between 1 and 4 hours depending on the size of the area and can be done under local or general anesthesia.

What is the recovery from abdominal liposuction like?

Following the liposuction, you will feel somewhat sore and bruised. Rest is usually prescribed for at least 4-5 days. After four weeks, you should begin to feel more normal. For up to four weeks after the surgery, you will be instructed to wear a compression garment ('suit') that wraps around your torso to hold the incision and the treated area firmly in place. Your abdominal area will likely experience some swelling and bruising, but the more faithfully you wear the compression garment, the quicker this will disappear. Any scarring will be nearly invisible. Three to four months after the surgery, you are likely to see the best results, with the sculpted body and flatter stomach you've worked so hard to get.

Who is a good candidate for abdominal liposuction?

Liposuction will not leave you with a supermodel's figure. It removes fat deposits and other problem areas that diet and exercise cannot solve. Ideally, candidates for stomach liposuction are no more than 10-20 pounds overweight, but some patients who opt for abdominal liposuction are not overweight at all. Tummy bulges can be a problem for adults of all ages, even young and generally fit people. Tummy liposuction is a popular choice with women and men from their early 20's to their late 60's: whomever needs a little extra help to get that perfectly sculpted abdomen or simply take a few inches off their waist.
